The Philippines has extended its lockdown of Manila until May 15 in an effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus, according to a report by Reuters.

The lockdown will also include other regions in the Philippines with large outbreaks but it will be modified in lower-risk areas, added the report.

Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesperson Harry Roque made the announcement yesterday.

According to CNN Philippines, Roque said the following provinces are considered high-risk and will be placed under extended enhanced community quarantine: Pangasinan, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecijia, Pampanga, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Albay, and Catanduanes.

Roque also said all areas that were not mentioned will be placed under “general community quarantine.”

The Philippines has 6,710 virus infections, including 446 deaths as of April 23, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

This is the second time the Philippines has extended its lockdown on Metro Manila. Initially, the lockdown was scheduled to last only until April 14. Duterte eventually decided to extend the lockdown on the island of Luzon, where Manila is located, until April 30.
